Christian Aid
for Tsunami Victims
Spearheaded by

"This seems to be a well thought out
approach to the distribution of relief aid.
It would be good if
churches in America would make similar specific commitments."

Gorrod, Church Elder & Minister of Missions

This just in ...
I just received an important
e-mail that you may want to consider and have confirmed this at
CNN.com:
Dr. David
Fletcher,
Treasurer, American Council of ACA
January 7—President signs bill that extends time to claim 2004
deductions for tsunami relief donations.
On Jan. 7, the President signed H.R. 241 into law. Under the
measure, taxpayers can elect to claim a charitable contribution
deduction in tax year 2004 for donations made through Jan. 31,
2005, for the relief of victims in areas affected by the Dec.
26, 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami provided the contribution is in
cash and otherwise meets the requirements for charitable
contribution deductions under Code Sec. 170 .
Federal Taxes Weekly Alert,

January
tsunami relief donations can be deducted in 2004
under a measure awaiting the President's signature. H.R. 241
On Jan. 6, Congress approved
H.R. 241, which would extend the period of time in which
taxpayers can make charitable contributions to assist victims of
the recent tsunami and deduct the contributions on their 2004
returns. Specifically, under the measure, taxpayers will be able
to claim a charitable contribution deduction in tax year 2004
for donations made through Jan. 31, 2005, for the relief of
victims in areas affected by the Dec. 26, 2004 Indian Ocean
tsunami provided the contribution is in cash and otherwise meets
the requirements for charitable contribution deductions under
Code Sec. 170 . Without this measure, which awaits the
President's signature, taxpayers would have to wait until next
year's filing season to claim a tax deduction for
tsunami-related gifts made after Dec. 31, 2004.

ACA to adopt a village
Dr. Joy George, President of the Asian Christian Academy of
Bangalore, India writes:
The team from Kolachal
returned and gave the report and they also brought lots of pictures
of the people and place affected by the disaster.
This village lost about 850
people. The faculty and the board is unanimous that our relief
effort should have a lasting value and we should set up a permanent
place in the area and convert that into a mission station with one
of our graduates to work permanently.
-
We
need to buy a land at least kilometer inland because the people
do not want to live close to the sea anymore. The cost of the
land will be around $30,000 dollars for an acre. The land in the
area are all prime land with plenty of water supply.
-
For
making the layout and constructing a house will cost around
$6000 dollars per house. They do not like apartments therefore
individual houses on a 30x40 site is to be built. These will be
one bedroom houses with kitchen, living room, toilets, drainage
and water supply.
-
We
need to build a community hall at a cost of about 30 thousand
dollars. An acre of land can have 25 house sites of 30x40 with
roads and place for the community hall. We can build as
many houses as the funds are available.
Since this is ACA project and
the land title will be ours, there will not be any restrictions for
teams from U.S churches to come and help in the construction and
relief work. I need to remind you that the place is extremely
hot and humid. Accommodation is available for visiting teams
in Nagarcoil which is 30 kilometers away.
Next weekend, our board
chairman and myself with a team from ACA will be visiting the place
to fix the land transaction. One of our graduates working in the
area is helping in this project. His name is Marshall. He works with
child evangelism fellowship.
Locally we are planning to
raise Rs. 100000 the from school and seminary.
The exciting thing about this aid is that local Christians will be
seeing the need and setting the strategy. Indian nationals will
direct the funds to the best places to help people—all
in the name and love of Jesus Christ. |
