Department of Old Testament Studies and Exegesis

The purpose of this department is to equip students to do accurate exegetical work in the Old Testament by comprehending and applying principles of textual criticism, lexicography, grammar and syntax, Old Testament backgrounds, hermeneutics and biblical Theology.

Required Courses in Old Testament Studies

101 Elements of Hebrew 4 Cr. Hrs.

and

102 Elements of Hebrew II - 3 Cr. Hrs.

• A study of the basic principles of phonology, morphology and syntax of biblical Hebrew with selected portions of the Hebrew Old Testament translated and analyzed, including the early chapters of Genesis.

103 Hebrew Grammar & Syntax - 3 Cr. Hrs.

• An introduction to the basic tools and methods for textual criticism and for lexical and syntactical analysis of the Hebrew text, with application of these methods to readings in Jonah and Ruth.

104 Principles of Hebrew Exegesis  - 3 Cr. Hrs.

• An introduction to the method of Old Testament exegesis by means of guided exegetical research in selected Psalms.

105 Old Testament Introduction & Survey  -  3 Cr. Hrs.

• A study of the composition, preservation and meaning of the Old Testament in light of ancient Near Eastern backgrounds and a study of   selected historical and literary Old Testament problems.
